Aiming at the international frontier of environmental science and technology and the major national demand for environmental issues, Liu Wenqing took the lead in systematically carrying out the innovative research on the cross integration of Optics and Environmental Science in China, opening up a new field of Environmental Optics in China, and developing new methods of environmental optical monitoring. We have successfully developed a series of advanced environmental monitoring technology and equipment, greatly improving the level of domestic environmental monitoring technology and equipment. He has built a comprehensive three-dimensional monitoring system for atmospheric environment from ground-based, airborne to space-based platform by using the independently developed high technology for atmospheric environment monitoring from ultraviolet, visible light to infrared full spectrum; developed a series of atmospheric environment monitoring technology and equipment, and realized industrialization, batch applied to China's environmental protection and meteorological operational atmospheric environment monitoring network, and promoted domestic industrial technology As the chief designer of gaofen-5 satellite payload development team, led the team to complete the development task of China's first high spectral resolution atmospheric environment observation satellite (gaofen-5) atmospheric environment detection payload.

Over the years, Liu Wenqing's team has repeatedly served the air quality assurance tasks of major national events such as the Olympic Games, the World Expo, the Asian Games, the APEC summit, the 93 military parade, the G20 summit, and the BRICs leaders' meeting.
