Experts' Interpretation: China promotes the whole society to accelerate the transformation to green

    Xie Zhenhua made the above remarks at the seminar on carbon neutrality and the results conference of the research project on China's long-term low-carbon development strategy and transformation path held on the same day. He said that China will integrate its response to climate change into the overall situation of social and economic development. Starting from the 12th Five Year Plan, China will promote low-carbon development by focusing on the systematic and binding goal of reducing carbon emission intensity per unit of GDP. In 2015, China put forward the goal of reaching the peak of carbon emission around 2030 and reaching the peak as soon as possible, and adopted measures such as adjusting the industrial structure, saving energy and resources, increasing energy consumption and increasing energy consumption Increasing forest carbon sequestration, establishing and operating carbon market and other policies and measures will promote the whole society to accelerate the transition to green and low carbon.

    Compared with 2005, China's carbon dioxide emissions per unit of GDP decreased by 48% in 2019. This is equivalent to about 5.62 billion tons of carbon dioxide emissions, 11.92 million tons of sulfur dioxide and 11.3 million tons of nitrogen oxides. During the same period, GDP increased more than four times, the proportion of coal consumption decreased from 72.4% to 55.7%, and the proportion of non fossil energy in primary energy increased from 7.4% to 15.3%.

    "It can be seen that policy actions to deal with climate change will not hinder economic development, but also help to improve the quality of economic growth and cultivate new industries and markets," Xie said.

    Xie Zhenhua pointed out that coping with climate change is an inherent need for China's sustainable development.
